I love shopping second hand.
I love vintage treasures.
I love finding little gems that have an unknown history.
I try and imagine how they spent their life before entering mine.
And, I love reusing and recycling something old instead of buying something new.
She had been wanting to share this little sweet spot with me for a very long time.
And....
It was amazing and wonderful.
And.so.much.fun.
In fact....
I found these little treasures right away.
Vintage transferware.....in brown.....swoon.
Loved these at first sight!
The pattern is called "Bow Bells" and...if you have any that needs a home. Call me.
Vintage Pyrex.
So simple.
There are so many fun colors out there.
And I, like, plain Jane.
What can I say?
Loved the gold flower print!
I was in need of some great bowls and storage containers as I have moved away from plastics.
And the bowls and covered dish were exactly what I had in mind.
The covered dish has homemade chicken and noodles in it.
Should I have shown you that?
Are you hungry while you are reading.....
I even made the thick, egg style noodles from scratch.
Yes, yes I did.
Served over creamy mashed potatoes and with buttery sweet corn.
OK.
I'll stop now.
Mercy.
A vintage homemade quilt.
Worn.
Very worn.
As in, all frayed around the edges and quilt squares that are coming apart.
See the black one?
I also love the blue and white checkered background.
I have been searching for a quilt this size.
It's perfect my little guy and his toddler bed.
Bigger than a crib sized quilt and smaller than a twin size.
It's the perfect weight and I am especially fond of using it, while sitting in the rocker, in their room, whilst reading a book.
This quilt alone was worth all of the time we spent looking for treasures.
It's perfect!
Books.
I know, I know. I say it all of the time.
I LOVE books.
I cherish books.
I am addicted to books.
And, can I just tell you....if you want to see fine writing, engaging stories, great illustrations, good grammar, and a much more eloquent way of speaking. Pick up a reader from the 50's.
Oh.my.goodness.
We loved this story about a boy and a bear.
*And as a little FYI. If you have vintage books, printed before 1980, that your children routinely look at. They may contain lead in the color.
Just a note of caution.
The postcard I picked up on my way out.
See where it says "New is over-rated!"? I love that. So true.
This place....was so cool.
So beautifully set up and exciting to explore.
There truly was something for everyone and in every price range you can imagine.
And the best part.....
Sharing this adventure with my daughter.
I love that we share a passion for vintage, frugal, thrifted and recycled treasures.
I love that we share a love of something "borrowed and blue" over something "new."
What about you?
What is your favorite second hand treasure?
XO
Kristin

love all your vintage finds, they are lovely!!!!
you have definately made me think, i LOVE second hand treasures too, and I now I am wondering what my favorite is...I will do a blog post about it. :) i love your bowls, and the quilt!!! i'm so happy for you because I know how good that feels to find something you LOVE.
LOVE the transferware...drooling actually! And the nesting bowls...yes please! Beautiful finds and I am definitely a vintage girl! So much so...that all my furniture in my house is either a) vintage or b)second hand!
My favorite vintage piece is my grandma and grandpa's Hoosier cabinet.
Kristen, I do the exact same thing. I look at my thrift finds and wonder where they lived, and who owned them. Beautiful transferware!!
That Quilt!!! DROOL!!!
Interesting about the lead paint in vintage children's books, I'm in trouble, I have many!!! YIKES.
I have too many vintage finds to name one a favorite. I have an old pink metal toy pick up truck in Anna's room that I love.
Love all your sweet finds, happy that you could spend time with your daughter.
I'll second Jenn.
everything here is vintage or secondhand, yardsale, goodwill.
I have one of those casserole dishes!!!
got it at a yardsale a few years ago!
what a find on that quilt too!
I'm going to be on the lookout for vintage books now!
thannks for sharing this. a great, great post!
I had a hard time reading after you mentioned the soup and mashed potatoes. I really wish I could try your cooking!! I love second hand treasures. One time I was praying for a piano. I really wanted one for the kids. Not too long after this, my sweet friend found me one. A missionary family was leaving and getting rid of their piano. I still need to give it some love and care, but it is a great treasure for the kids. They have so much fun on it. Now, I just need to get them some lessons so we can have some beautiful melodies!
Sigh-love it all, what great finds!
Thanks for sharing your wonderful finds, Kristin.
I am very much a vintage person, not by active pursuit. Much of what we own is old family furniture, handed down over the years, primarily because when we were starting out, we didn't have the money to purchase new things.
If you can find something that you love, that is being reused, why not?
Two of my daughters actually love looking for old furniture. The youngest finds terrific bargains at her local goodwill. Not that they don't love new things, too, they just balk at the price.
Now, in my case, when I could possibly afford to buy something new, I just cannot set my mind to do it. I love the old things that I have accumulated over the years. And, with four children, there generally is something better to do with the $$.
It was hard for me to come up with a personal favorite vintage piece, but I do have to admit, that these little guys make me smile every year that I put them out: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jrcrazy/342082673/
They came from my Great Aunt Winnie and Uncle Paul's Christmas ornament collection that everyone passed on. Love them!
But, I'd be remiss if I did not feature this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jrcrazy/270940363/
a hand tatted tablecloth made sometime in the 1920's by my gr.grandfather's sister, who immigrated in 1921.
It has some real personal meaning besides being old.
If that isn't special, then I don't know what is!
Do you ever think of the story behind the items that you purchase?
Just want to add here, that I so lucky to have found your site.
I'm staying with my daughter whose new baby is 4 weeks old today. She's been having some post delivery complications and her husband's job keeps him away most of the day. Having just moved, she has no one really to help her. So, I flew down.
But, the point here is, that because of the baby's mouth, she is having difficult getting him to nurse. She's pumping like crazy to get milk to feed him in a bottle. The lactation consultant mentioned that oatmeal is sometime helpful in increasing milk supply.
So, I remembered your Baked Apple Pie Oatmeal, found it online (Don't know why I didn't bookmark it under google book marks so I could find it anywhere) and it is in the oven, baking.
Now, I'm just a bit hungry, because I read through most of your recipes before I actually found this one, and there are a LOT of mouth-watering, yummy recipes featured.
Thanks, and if you have any other ideas that would help out with this problem, I'm open to suggestions.
Barbara
