There. I said it.
Darkest secrets revealed.
I know. Right?
How can a mama who loves all things domestic and homey.....not posses these skills?
But.... here is the thing, sugar pie's.
Cut it into the shape of a hat.
And sew it together like nobody's business!
That's right!
And you can too.
All you need is one thrifty, chunky, cable knit type of sweater.
Another stocking cap to use as your pattern.
And a little embellishment if you so choose.
Place the hat at the bottom of the sweater, so that the bottom edge of the hat and the finished edge of the sweater are together. Then cut around the outline.
Turning the two sweater pieces wrong side out.
Sew around the edge.
Trim any extra off the edges if needed, but be careful not to get too close to the seam.
Turn back then so it's right side out.
And voila!
You have a sweater hat!
And since you used the bottom edge of the sweater. You already have a perfectly ribbed finish on your hat, that stretches around your baby's head.
Or big guy.
Or sweet girlie.
I then traced a letter on some fun, stripey, left over fabric, fused it to a piece of felt, and then sewed it onto the hat for a personal touch.
I know it's quirky.
And homemade looking.
And a little bumpy on top.
But....I love it.
And I'm telling ya....I smile every time I see this hat.
And....
Living in the country.
With a bunch of boys.
Means we need lots of hats around here.
If you decide to do this.
I can get 2 hats out of a sweater....maybe 3. depending on the size of the sweater and the size of the kids.
I love making stuff.
I love making stuff for my kids.
I love making stuff with my kids.
I am working on one today, for my bigger guy, as he wants one, too.
Isn't that how it usually goes?
Staying home.
Saving money.
Using what I have.
Making memories.
PERFECTION!
Go raid your closet!

Such a cute idea!!!
Love it!!!!!
So much fun to make handmade items for our family!!!
Cute, cute!!! I cannot sew!!!! But thankfully I have a ten year old that LOVES to sew. This blesses me because she can make some fun skirts for the girls. And she can fix all the things I should be able to fix. xoxo
re-purpose it on mama!
I'm saving my sweaters now...
This is fantastic!!! Your hat turned out so cute!! And I love the fact that you can have a knit hat.....in such a short amount of time. I can't wait to give this a try - thanks for sharing!!
So cool! I am in kind of the same boat as you; I also love all things domestic but I can only do basic hand sewing and I can't knit or crochet or use a sewing machine! But my daughter is learning how to knit through a class at church and she is going to teach me when she is done!
Great job!
Blessings,
Johanna
Hahahah! My kind of sewing. Everyone always wants to teach me how to sew. I say bartering garden goods and baked things for someone else's sewing skills works better for me. :) Cute hats though.
Kristin, This is SUPER cute! You did a great job!
